The Victory Home:
War Work
Within
a few months after Pearl Harbor, work was suddenly available, after
more
than a decade of the Great Depression. Industries switched from
producing
consumer goods to war materials. In addition to the abundance of jobs
in
industry, farmers were desperately needed to produce food. In addition
to
the obvious need for soldiers, sailors, airmen, and medical personnel,
there
was also a need for civilian personnel to man offices in Washington and
at
armed forces bases. Women were encouraged to enter the work world in
order
to free up men to fight.
