Transportation--Trains


Poster:  Help Bring Them Back to You! Make Yours a Victory Home!
Trains were needed to transport troops and government workers. Since civilians could no longer drive long distances due to gas rationing, the trains were quite crowded. As with the buses, civilians were urged to stay home if possible.

Long Island Railroad passenger coach manned by the first women trainmen on this line, who started work the day after an intensive training period. Mrs. Florence L. Lawyer (foreground) collecting tickets, while Miss Marcella Craft (background) gives information from her timetable to a passenger.

These four photographs were taken at the railroad station when a noon train came in. All trains coming into San Diego are crowded and are an indication of the hordes of people pouring into the city. California.
